Last weekend the society went online, that is, we now have our own web
site. Perhaps this wont mean much to most members, but for those who have
access to the Internet (and more and more people have these days) everything you need to
know about our society is now available on our new site. This includes all back
issues of our newsletter and eventually, hopefully, all details of our past and present
projects.
Andy Best has written the site and I would like to congratulate him on the great job he
has done. There are many advantages to going online. Besides the obvious
effect of heightening the profile of our society, it will also provide a useful means of
publishing our work to interested parties, without the burden of expensive printing costs.
New Committee
As you can see below, the committee has a new look. We have a new Madam-Chairman
(Mandy Singleton) and for the first time a Vice-Chairman (Tom Glover). Also at last
months AGM, both Adrian Morris and Eddy Penington agreed to continue as committee
members. I would like to thank Dave Thomas for the loan of the projector we used to
show the video at last months meeting. The quality of this equipment is
brilliant and together with high quality sound the effect is like being in the cinema.
Funds Granted
At last months meeting, I was able to announce that the society had been
successful in its application for money from the Community Chest. This is for the
first phase of the construction of our resistivity meter and hopefully we will be just as
successful with the following phases. This will enable us to purchase the relevant
software and perhaps build a data logger. As you can see, the meter is
complete. The probe frames are presently being made and should be ready within the
next few weeks.
Angers
Another suggestion made at the AGM was that an exchange trip could be arranged with our
twin city of Angers in France. The best time would be towards the end of the year
and those who are interested should contact Tom Glover or myself at the meeting.
Programme
We now have a complete programme for this year and I think you will agree it looks
pretty impressive.

Next Meeting
Wednesday 1st March at our new venue, the BP Centre (Scout HQ) in Greenough Street, at
7.30 pm as usual. As you can see above, this months speaker is Steve Hewlett
from the Wigan and Leigh College Geology Department talking on Prehistoric Stone
Circles. He presently runs the O Level Archaeology course there and is
the keeper of a fine geology museum on the top floor.
Hope to see you at the meeting - B.A.
